Beauty Tip of the Week: Get Glowing Skin for the Summer!

Natures_Minerals_Bro1_858431-282x300
*Photo from here
Summer is almost here, and we don’t want our skin showing any signs of those dry winter months! Here’s a few tricks to keep your skin looking glowy:
Items are linked to Amazon where you can find them cheaper! (Prices aren’t exact)

-Exfoliate! Your skin cannot shine if there is dead skin on it making it look dull. My favorite was is using a gentle scrub every night like the Biore Pore Unclogging Scrub. Every other night I use it with my Olay ProX Cleansing System ($27.50 on Amazon). I did a review on it here. This little gadget really does the trick to make your skin look more luminous. And it even helps fade acne marks left over!
-Toner! Using a toner after washing my face always instantly makes it look more moisturized. This helps to close up your pores and add essential moisture back to your face that was stripped away with your cleanser. And it removes any leftover residue. I like the Neutrogena Alcohol-Free Toner ($4 on Amazon). Make sure it does not contain that drying alcohol!
-Moisturize! No matter if you have oily skin or dry skin, you must moisturize! If you dry out your skin it is just going to produce more oil, causing too much shininess. I like to use a thick cream at night, like the Olay Night Night Recovery Cream ($16 on Amazon), and the Aveeno Positively Radiant Daily Moisturizer with SPF 15 ($14 on Amazon). You must have an SPF in your morning moisturizer. Your foundation should contain it as well, especially in the summer. Then sun dries skin out and damages it, making it appear more dull.
-Light Foundation! The heavier your foundation is, the more cakey and less natural your skin will look. Heavy foundation also clogs up pores and leads to breakouts and larger pores. Especially in the summer, I like to use a light foundation that still has good coverage like the Covergirl NatureLuxe ($10 on Amazon). It contains moisturizing ingredients like cucumber extract and does not have pore clogging ingredients. You could also use a tinted moisturizer, for an even lighter coverage.
-Powder sparingly! Only apply your setting powder to your T-zone or areas where you get oily. If your skin is dry, you probably don’t even need a powder. My favorite is the MAC Mineralized Skinfinish Natural.
-Highlighter! I love using a highlighter to finish off my face makeup! Apply it right at the top of your cheek bones, down to your nose and up your temples and under your brow. You can also apply it down the bridge of your nose (which makes it appear thinner) and on your cupid’s bow above your lip (which makes them appear fuller). Where ever the light hits naturally! This really brightens up your entire face, but don’t go too crazy with it. I love the Revlon Finishing Powder in Brighten ($5 on Amazon).
Let me know if you try any of these tips! How do you get glowy skin for the summer?

Beauty Tip of the Week: Prevent Eyeliner & Mascara from Smudging

*image from here

Of course we don't want our eyeliner and mascara smeared all down our face like this. I know a few things to keep your work of art in place, and not going anywhere! Whether its pencil eyeliner, gel, cream, liquid, or mascara, you can keep it in its place. And not have raccoon eyes!

-Use a good quality eyeliner. If you have a problem with watery eyes or oily lids, you might want to consider a waterproof formula. One of my favorites pencil one is the Urban Decay 24-7 Glide On Pencil. These are the creamiest, most pigmented, and long lasting. I have a short review on them here. My favorite gel liners are the Maybelline Eyestudio Gel Liners. They are amazing quality, and affordable! For liquid liner, my all time favorite is the L'Oreal Lineur Intense Felt Tip Liquid Liner. It is so easy to use and is super black!

-After applying liner, set it with a powder. This applies with any cream products. They must be set with some sort of powder to keep them in place. When I use a black eyeliner, I take a matte black eyeshadow like MAC's Carbon, and an angled brush, and press the eyeshadow over it. This even keeps the eyeliner on my waterline all day! I do the same when I use a brown or a navy eyeliner. It makes such a difference!

-Use your face powder around your eyes. If your mascara tends to smudge on your upper or lower lid throughout the day, try setting your concealer and foundation around your eyes with a powder. A translucent one would work best since you don't want to cake up this area. But I just use my MAC Mineralized Skinfinish Natural since it is light. This makes your lids matte so you don't get those pesky dots above your lids from your lashes, or so your eyeliner doesn't smudge. And it will keep you under eye concealer from fading or creasing!

-Another small tip I like to do when I use liquid liner on the top and pencil on the bottom is: when making the winged part, use the liquid liner to connect the top to the bottom instead of the pencil (if that made any sense!) I find that when I make the wing with the liquid and then use the pencil to connect it to the bottom, I get a smudge in the corner of my eye. When I use the liquid in the corner it doesn't move, since the liquid liner is not creamy.

So set pencil and gel liners with an eyeshadow and use your face powder around your eyes and your eyeliner and mascara aren't going anywhere! So simple but it works!

Leave me your beauty tips in the comments below so I can include some in my next post!

Beauty Tip of the Week: Treat & Fade a Blemish

Acne-scar-removal-cream*image: http://www.sophisticatededge.com/scars.html

I get the a few blemishes here and there, and it is not fun. If you don’t have major acne, it can be really annoying when your whole face is clear but you have one pesky mark that stands out. They seem to take forever to heal and fade away. Nothing works magic, but I know a few tricks that will help speed up the process. This apply for all skin types, and no matter if you have severe acne, or the occasional blemish.

They say not to pop them, to let them heal on their own to prevent scarring. The best thing to do is just avoid extracting them all together. But this can be very difficult to do because they go away so much faster when they gunk is out that made the pore clog up in the first place. I think it just kind of depends on the type of blemish. If it is deep under your skin, and has no ‘head’, then I would leave it alone, and let it heal. But if it is showing, like a whitehead, then you could gently remove it using a tissue around each finger and pulling the skin apart. But do know that this is breaking the skin, which can cause those annoying marks that take forever to fade.

After washing your face, use a toner on a cotton pad to remove any oil or residue leftover, and close up your pores.

Then use an acne spot treatment. Most of the contain salicylic acid, which works, but I think takes a little longer to work and is not as strong. The best one I have tried is the Clean & Clear Advantage Mark Treatment. I like using one that contains benzoyl peroxide, because it is stronger and dries it up quicker. I use the Mary Kay Acne Spot Treatment, but I’m sure there are some at the drugstore that have benzoyl peroxide too.

If you want it to dry up fast, dab a lot on, but don’t rub it in. Then go to bed with it so it can sit for a long time.

Sometimes when you just apply the spot treatment, the skin around it can get dry and flaky, especially if you have dryer skin. So what you can do to prevent that is:

Put a small amount of the spot treatment right on the blemish and tap it into your skin. Try not to rub it around the entire thing, because the skin around it will get dry. Then apply a thin layer of moisturizer all over your face. (I like the Olay Original Active Hydrating Cream for nighttime). Then apply a second layer of the spot treatment over it again. Buy applying the moisturizer too, and in those steps, it treats the spot without drying it out. Continue doing this twice a day until it is dried up.

After the blemish has dried out, to wear it is flatter and does not hurt to touch it, you are probably left with a dark mark, or even a scab. At night (don’t do this before applying makeup), use an antibacterial ointment like Neosporin (I use the generic) and blob it up over the spot and let it sit all night. This is also used to treat cuts and wounds, so it will heal up a acne mark or scab too. It has the consistency like Vaseline, so it will keep the area moist so it can heal. And it is antibacterial, so it kills any leftover bacterial. I usually have to use this about 2 or 3 nights in a row, depending on how dark the spot is. And it fades away! I even use this nightly on old acne scars, and they fade away!

Just a recap:
-Apply your spot treatment in layers with your moisturizer to prevent flakiness
-Use an antibacterial ointment to fade leftover marks

I hope this helped! Let me know if you try these! Also, what are your tricks to fade marks?

Beauty Tip of the Week: Get Stronger, Healthier Nails

I have struggled with dry brittle nails for most of my life. I used to wear acrylic nails the majority of the time, which is super damaging for them. Click here to see how I did acrylics myself. I have not worn them for two years now, and my nails are just now getting back to normal. It has been a long journey for sure, but I have a few tips that helped that I want to share..

-First of all, STAY AWAY from any form of fake nails. This means acrylics (especially), gel, silk, press ons, there are so many different forms. Anything that requires your nails to be filed down and uses harsh chemicals and glues. These are okay every once in a while for special occasions, but do not wear them constantly. If you grow your nails out naturally and get them hard, you will get them same effect of the fakes. If you can't stand your nails being plain, like me, then just keep polishing them. I have to switch my color every week or I get bored! If you want that fake nail look, you can use a top coat with acrylic gel in it, like the one I mention here.

-Avoid excessive filing and buffing. I use a nail buffer block that is made for natural nails, and I only use it once a week, or every other week. When you file your nails, always use a fine grit nail file that is designed for natural nails. Click here to see my at home manicure.

-Avoid using nail polish remover that contains acetone. Acetone is very strong and it used to remove artificial nails, but it is not necessary when just removing nail polish. Yes, it will make your nail polish come of a lot quicker when removing it, but it is very drying for your nails.

-Always keep your nails moisturized. Avoid using too much hand sanitizer and always apply lotion after washing your hands. Use a deep hand treatment at night, like the Burt's Bees Almond Milk Hand Creme, which I featured in an Ins & Outs Video here. Also, use a cuticle creme or oil daily. I really like the Burt's Bees Lemon Butter Cuticle Creme. The more dry your nails are, the more brittle they will be, which leads to breakage.

-Keep your nails well groomed. Always keep cuticles pushed back, and the skin off your nails. But NEVER cut off your cuticles. They are there to protect your nails. But when they grow up too much, your nails may not grow as fast, and it makes them look shorter. If they are really bad, they can be trimmed after you push them back, but only trim the excess, not cut the whole thing off. Check out my manicure tutorial for more on that.

-Use a strengthening clear polish, like Sally Hansen's 4-in-1 Treatment. Which I have talked a lot about too. I featured it in my Best of Beauty 2010. It has strengtheners and hardeners in it, which helps keep my nails hard so they don't break.

-NEVER BITE YOUR NAILS. I cannot stress this enough! It is so unsanitary, and a terrible habit. It not only looks bad when you're doing it, but your nails will not be healthy. There is a lot you can do to stop biting that you can find online. I think most importantly though, is figure out why you do it (like maybe being nervous) and try to fix the source. You could chew gum, or something to keep your hands busy. Paint your nails a pretty color, or do a fun nail design, which might help you not want to ruin them. It is a breakable habit!

-Most importantly, eat healthy! Your nails need lots of vitamins, like Calcium, Vitamin-A, D, C, and E, and B-Complex. Eat lots of fruits and veggies. I take a Hair, Skin, and Nails Vitamin by Nature's Bounty. I have really seen a difference. I am planning a full review on them soon!

I hope this helped! I hope everyone can get healthy strong nails!
